Germany: Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a cozy little college town. It's most famous for its enormous castle (one of the few cultural things in the city) and Fetters beer (highest proof in Germany). Heidelberg is the perfect place to chill out. In the center of town (Marktplatz) you'll find adorable cobblestone streets littered with bars and live music.

Heidelberg Things to Do

Marktplatz This is the place to hang out. Not only is this where the cafés and nightlife thrive, but there's also cool old buildings to admire. There is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirt) and the Haus zum Ritter (hotel of Roman knights) and the Rathaus (town hall).

Studentenkarzer (Student Jail) Back in the day the locked kids up for days, feeding them bread and water if they committed common crimes such as public drunkenness. You can tour the old jails and check out their graffiti. Located at Augustinerstrasse 2, a short walk southwest from Marktplatz.

Schloss (Castle) Inside the castle there is an Apotheken Museum (Pharmacy Museum) commemorating the typical 18th century drug store. The coolest thing is the mummy with hair. There is also a giant wine cask that can hold nearly 50,000 gallons of wine. In July and August the castle hosts open-air theatre performances.

Alte Brucke (Old Bridge) This thing stretches over the Neckar River and the entrance is cool as shit. In the middle of the bridge you'll also get a good view of the city. It's a few blocks northwest of the Marktplatz.

Heidelberg Art Gallery A cool art gallery with a bunch of trippy modern pieces. Located at Hauptstrasse 97 -- an easy walk from Marktplatz.
