Yugoslavia: Belgrade

If you're an American visiting Belgrade, you may want to consider getting the hell out of there. NATO did some shady shit and bombed Yugoslavia in 1999. The people are still pretty pissed (understandably).

If you ignore us and happen to visit, you should know that there are two ATMs in the entire city. Tourist information highlighted them for us on a map. We found one and it was broken. We never found the other.

Also, Belgrade does not accept credit cards. Some stores have Visa and MasterCard stickers in the window but they're just for decoration. The store clerks will point you in the direction of a bank for a cash advance if you're really stuck.

As far as touristy things go, the main shopping street is a short walk from the train station and it's lovely. There are also some brilliant castles and cathedrals with very few tourists. The gardens are large and spacious... but have fun when a one-legged beggar yells at you for the sins of your country.
